The Central ledger · Yakima, Washington

Four generations, one name on the van, since 1909.

Central started as the Lightness family’s plumbing shop. It has been kept ever since by people who learned the trade under the one before them. Below is the record, in the company’s own words, from the first year to the hundredth and on.

That is why a call to our office still gets answered by a family business, whether you need plumbing repair, an installation or commercial plumbing for your business.

A hundred years of service, entry by entry

  1. 1909

    The founding

Founded in 1909 by the Lightness Family, Central Mechanical has been a cornerstone of quality plumbing services for over a century. Robert Lightness led the company until 1981, instilling a tradition of excellence passed through generations.

  2. 1957

From Army service to plumbing service

William Ash, a U.S. Army veteran, started his plumbing apprenticeship under the Lightness family in 1957. His military background instilled honor, pride, and commitment, values he carried into his career. William eventually took over the company and ran it until 2002, when his son Kris Ash succeeded him.

  3. Kris

    Follows in his father's footsteps

Growing up in the industry, Kris acquired deep insights into plumbing, hydronics, and boilers. Working in the field for 15 years, Kris gained a unique understanding of customer needs before becoming the project manager and estimator.

  4. 2002

    The next generation

In 2002, Kris's son Steven began his plumbing apprenticeship. Steven has since earned multiple certifications, including journeyman plumber, medical gas, and others.

  5. 2009

    One hundred years

Our passion for quality and innovation grows every day. We integrate cutting-edge technology while preserving old-time craftsmanship. In 2009, we celebrated our 100th anniversary, and we look forward to serving our community for another 100 years.

Steven holds a medical gas certification, which is why healthcare facilities appear on our commercial plumbing page, and Kris’s years in the field come before the estimates he writes today.
